Today, let’s take a moment to observe International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia & Biphobia. Celebrated for the first time almost 20 years ago, in 2005, this day was chosen in recognition of the World Health Organization’s decision to declassify homosexuality as a mental disorder on May 17th, 1990.

Every year, people around the world are challenged & encouraged to step into their power to combat violence and discrimination against their 2SLGBTQIA+ peers, in their communities and beyond. Our capacity and boundaries around how each of us does so are rooted in our unique lived experience - some examples of how this may manifest include:

- Engaging with & supporting Queer programming in your community
- Volunteering your time in support of Queer organizations & initiatives
- Using your personal & professional platforms to amplify and uplift Queer voices
- Combating & decrying anti-Queer legislation in your government

What are some of your favorite ways to show up?

Wishing each of you & yours a lovely day. Let’s continue to center Queer joy & resilience, speak up for a world we all deserve, and support each other in this lifelong pursuit 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️

"Alix is about the adventure - she can liberate people with that personal energy, the fearlessness, the lightheartedness."

We couldn’t be more excited to be screening “Left Lane: On the Road with Folk Poet Alix Olson” this Saturday at Poetry on Fire!

Selected in over 40 festivals worldwide and having won eight Audience Awards, join us in celebrating this Queer poetry icon amongst some of Calgary’s own finest poets.

Here’s what the New York Times had to say about this inspiring time capsule of a film:

“Take to the road with internationally renowned folk poet and progressive queer artist/activist Alix Olson and manager/filmmaker Samantha Farinella in this intimate portrait that follows the duo across the country while highlighting spoken word performances and fueling the never-ending struggle to promote independent thought. Igniting and inspiring audiences wherever she may travel, Olson uses her witty and sympathetic voice to highlight a grassroots struggle against intolerance that is as entertaining as it is poignant.”

Tickets are available online now via the link in our bio, with limited amounts held at the door 🤞

Barrier-free tickets are also available - get in touch with marissa [at] calgaryqueerartssociety [dot] com for more info 💖

See you there! 💫
