Today, let’s take a moment to observe International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia & Biphobia. Celebrated for the first time almost 20 years ago, in 2005, this day was chosen in recognition of the World Health Organization’s decision to declassify homosexuality as a mental disorder on May 17th, 1990.
Every year, people around the world are challenged & encouraged to step into their power to combat violence and discrimination against their 2SLGBTQIA+ peers, in their communities and beyond. Our capacity and boundaries around how each of us does so are rooted in our unique lived experience - some examples of how this may manifest include:
- Engaging with & supporting Queer programming in your community
- Volunteering your time in support of Queer organizations & initiatives
- Using your personal & professional platforms to amplify and uplift Queer voices
- Combating & decrying anti-Queer legislation in your government

We’re thrilled to re-introduce a familiar face in Shone Thistle: Calgary Queer Arts Society’s Executive Director, and our emcee for tonight ✨
Shone Thistle is an author, poet and multidisciplinary artist. Their work ranges from radio to jazz ensemble, festival to conference keynote, inner city cabaret to gallery by the sea. They’ve received perfect scores at the world-famous Nuyorican Poets Cafe, and recently wrote, produced and collaborated on Nippy I’aoue Water We, a sound art installation and cabaret performance for Arts Commons. Shone’s writing can be found in several anthologies, including Mic Check: An Anthology of Canadian Spoken Word Poetry, and YYC POP: Poetic Portraits of the People.

Meet Skylar Kay, the latest addition to our star-studded Poetry on Fire lineup! Here`s your chance to experience her intimate works firsthand 🌠
Skylar Kay`s work has been described as raw, tender and tinged with humour and grace, appearing in numerous literary journals across North America and Europe. Her first book of poetry, Transcribing Moonlight (Frontenac House, 2022) was shortlisted for the 2023 Gerald Lampert Memorial Award, and won the 2023 Robert Kroetsch Award for Poetry. She is a grad school dropout, and guardian to a very fluffy cat.

The Fairy Tales Queer Film Festival would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge that we operate on the traditional territories of the people of the Treaty 7 region in Southern Alberta, which includes the Blackfoot Confederacy (comprising the Siksika, Piikani, and Kainai First Nations), the Tsuut’ina First Nation, and the Stoney Nakoda (including the Chiniki, Bearspaw, and Wesley First Nations) this land is also home to the Métis Nation of Alberta, Region III. We acknowledge the traditional caregivers of this land and the importance of a commitment to continued decolonization of our work for the dignity and equity of all. We would like also recognize that Treaty 7 is about a relationship we all actively share in, as settlers and original peoples. A relationship needs to be open, honest, respectful, mutually beneficial and grounded in meaningful reconciliation.
